The School of Engineering sits at the highest point of the University of Jordan. It was established by a Royal Decree in 1974, and teaching began in 1975 in the Civil and Architectural Engineering departments. In 1976, teaching started in the Electrical Engineering department, followed by the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering departments in 1977. The Industrial Engineering department was established in 1988, and the Computer Engineering department was added in 2001. Additionally, a Mechatronics Engineering program was established w​ithin the Electrical Engineering department in the year 2000. In 2024, an Aerospace Engineering program was established in cooperation with the Jordan Aircraft Maintenance Company (JorAMCo).

The first class graduated from the School in 1979, with 73 male and female students. Successive classes of graduates followed in the subsequent years, as shown in Figure (1), reaching 845 graduates in 2024 from various degrees (Bachelor's, Higher Diploma, Master's, and Doctorate).

The School initially began receiving students and teaching in the buildings of the School of Science at the University of Jordan. It moved to its permanent (current) building in 1983, which has an area of over 34,000 m² on a land plot of 56,800 m².

The increase in the number of students admitted to the School of Engineering has continued, as the number of graduating students reflects this increase, as is clear in Figure (1).

In 2025, the number of students in the School reached about 5,083, including 541 postgraduate students. They are taught and supervised by 155 School members and 68 lab technicians, operating within a building area of 43,300 m².

In line with the University of Jordan's goals in its pursuit of global excellence, the School of Engineering decided to begin accrediting its programs through the American Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). At the beginning of the 2016/2017 academic year, it successfully accredited three of its programs (from the first evaluation round in November 2015): Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The other programs (Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering) obtained ABET accreditation in the summer of 2017. All these programs are accredited until September 30, 2028.

The School of Engineering comprises eight departments: Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and the Aerospace Engineering program in cooperation with the Jordan Aircraft Maintenance Company (JorAMCo) at the undergraduate level. In addition, it offers eighteen master's programs, one professional diploma program, and has launched a joint PhD program in Mechanical Engineering with the Hamburg University of Technology in Germany. The School is also preparing to launch a joint PhD program in Computer Engineering with the University of Nebraska in the USA.

The University of Jordan achieved a qualitative leap in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, most notably in the field of Engineering and Technology, which rose from rank 253 in 2024 to rank 150 in 2025.

At the specific subject level, Computer Science and Information Systems advanced to rank 100 globally, after being at rank 149 last year. Civil Engineering was ranked 229, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering was ranked 232. Meanwhile, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering rose to rank 291, and Chemical Engineering entered the rankings at position 398 globally.

These programs adopt modern and dynamically evolving curricula that achieve their educational objectives. These objectives ensure that graduates acquire high-level skills and capabilities that meet labor market needs and reflect the School's role, derived from the university's mission, in serving and developing the local community. They also align with the highest local and international standards. All the following programs have obtained international ABET accreditation: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering. Meanwhile, the Architectural Engineering department will apply for international NAAB accreditation.

This is because we have already achieved remarkable success in education and research and we intend to maintain and build upon it. In addition, the School of Engineering houses numerous research and industrial units, such as the Industry Liaison Unit, the Jordan Design and Development Bureau (JODDB) research labs, engineering workshops, and the Industrial Partnership Council.
