The University of Jordan (UJ) has inaugurated the Professor Omar Hatamleh Lecture Hall at the School of Engineering during an academic event examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping engineering education, scientific research, and the labour market.
The event featured Hatamleh and was attended by UJ President Prof. Nathir Obeidat and Dean of the School of Engineering Prof. Menwer Attarakih, alongside UJ vice presidents, faculty and administrative staff, and students.
UJ said the naming recognises Hatamleh as a distinguished alumnus and reflects the University’s commitment to highlighting accomplished graduates as credible role models within its academic community.
Obeidat described AI as a transformative force across sectors and professions, noting that UJ is treating this shift as a strategic priority. He pointed to the School of Engineering’s postgraduate programmes in AI, as well as joint doctoral pathways with international partner universities.
Attarakih said AI’s impact now reaches the core of engineering thinking, with growing emphasis on algorithms and systems that translate data into actionable knowledge. He added that universities must rethink how they train engineers and researchers, stressing that AI tools should strengthen human reasoning and analysis, not replace them.
In his lecture, Hatamleh said the key challenge is ensuring alignment between AI progress and human interests, warning that any divergence could steer society toward a dystopian future. He also called for clear ethical frameworks grounded in safety, transparency, accountability, and privacy.
UJ said the honour aims to inspire students and researchers by celebrating accomplished alumni and reinforcing models of professional excellence across the campus community.
