School of Engineering - Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department Strategy

Mission

To provide a comprehensive mechanical engineering education that enables graduates to assume active roles in proper engineering practice under various professional environments and constraints, advance the mechanical engineering discipline through partnership with local and international industries and professional and academic engineering institutions, and improve the quality of life of mankind through teaching, scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurial activities, and outreach programs.

Vision

To become a globally recognized program for its excellence in mechanical engineering education, research, innovation, and outreach.

Objectives & Outcomes

Mechanical Engineering  BSc Program Educational Objectives

The following educational objectives of the BSc program in Mechanical Engineering were initially developed based on the missions of the University, the School of Engineering, and the Department, and input from representatives from the program constituencies. They were discussed and modified by the Industrial Advisory Board in its second meeting on the 9th of May 2021. The final approved PEOs are:

1. Succeed in applying effective solutions of mechanical and related engineering problems that integrate contemporary practices and modern tools under various engineering constraints and standards.

2. Effectively assume management and leadership roles, professionally and ethically, instill collegiality and multidisciplinary teamwork in work environment.

3. Engage in continuous professional development and/or higher education, entrepreneurial activities, and community service.

Student Outcomes

Each Mechanical Engineering student will demonstrate the following attributes by the time he/she graduates:
1-   An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
2-   An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
3-   An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
4-   An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
5-   An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
6-   An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

7-   An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
