Ø Background to the program
and subject area:
The Bachelor of Science
(B.SC.) degree program in Mechanical Engineering (ME) department was established
in 1978. Since then, more than 2500 mechanical engineers had graduated. The ME department
graduates, both BSc and MSc, are employed inside Jordan and abroad, mostly in
the Gulf States and to a less extent in Europe and North America. Many of
them finished their post graduate studies and were appointed in well recognized
research and academic institutions worldwide. The department has 21 faculty
members who are experts in their fields of specialization. In addition to
teaching, faculty members conduct high quality scientific research which is
published in high ranking scientific journals. The department hosts eight
laboratories for providing practical hands on experience to accompany the
theoretical material of the curriculum. The undergraduate program accepts about 100 students each academic year. The ME department vision, mission, and
educational objectives are aligned with those of the University and the School
of Engineering which target excellence in teaching, research, and community
service.

Beside
the undergraduate program, the department offers Master of Science (MSc) in
Mechanical Engineering. Most recently, two master programs were established in
cooperation with the European Union through the TEMPUS program, namely:
1.
Master of Science (M.SC.) in Renewable Energy
2.
Master of Science (M.SC.) in Environmental Engineering and Climate Change
Although
all engineering programs offered at the School of Engineering are accredited by
the Jordanian Accreditation Council of the Ministry of Higher Education and
Scientific Research, the ME program has been accreditation in 2015 by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and
Technology (ABET), USA. ABET is
internationally recognized as an evidence-based system of accreditation that
promotes continuous improvement in engineering education. The duration of
ABET accreditation is six years and thus, accredited programs apply for
reaccreditation every six years. Currently, the ME department is preparing for
the upcoming ABET reaccreditation review next Fall semester 2021.
Ø Vision statements of the
program:
To become
a globally recognized program for its excellence in mechanical engineering
education, research, innovation, and outreach.
Ø Mission statements of the
program:
To
provide a comprehensive mechanical engineering education that enables graduates
to assume active roles in proper engineering practice under various
professional environments and constraints, advance the mechanical engineering
discipline through partnership with local and international industries and
professional and academic engineering institutions, and improve the quality of
life of mankind through teaching, scientific research, innovation and
entrepreneurial activities, and outreach programs.
Ø Program Educational
Objectives:
The
following educational objectives of the BSc program in Mechanical Engineering were
developed based on the missions of the University, the School of
Engineering, and the Department, and input from representatives from the program
constituencies. They were discussed and modified by the Industrial Advisory
Board in its second meeting on the 9th of May 2021. The final approved
PEOs are:
1.
Succeed in applying effective solutions of mechanical and related
engineering problems that integrate contemporary practices and modern tools
under various engineering constraints and standards.
2.
Effectively assume management and leadership roles, professionally and
ethically, instill collegiality and multidisciplinary teamwork in work
environment.
3.
Engage in continuous professional development and/or higher education,
entrepreneurial activities, and community service.
