PPBDesigner: A Population Balance-Based software for Modelling and Simulation of Liquid-Liquid Extraction Columns

To these days, the common approach to design Liquid-Liquid extraction columns is based on pilot plant scale data and the use of the original fluids due to the complex phenomena prevailing in such equipment. The classical models used in closed chemical process simulators are oversimplified. This is because the dispersed phase is treated as pseudo-homogeneous phase and many phenomena influencing the hydrodynamics and mass transfer performances are accordingly lost. To overcome this shortcoming, we introduce PPBDesigner as the first software that uses a population balance modeling framework to model and simulate Liquid-liquid extraction columns of different types (Pulsed/Agitated) within flowsheeting environment. This modeling approach is adapted by chemical processes to simulate and design equipment exhibiting two phase-flow with a discrete character. In this regard, the general Population Balance Equation (PBE) couples mass transfer and hydrodynamics and gives a real description of the behavior of the discrete phase by considering breakage and coalescence phenomena, axial dispersion, and buoyancy-driven motion of drops inside the extraction column. To demonstrate the PPBDesigner capabilities, a Rotating Disc Contactor (RDC) combined with a distillation column for solvent recovery is simulated. The available flexibility to vary the model parameters allows the user to optimize the column and to analyze the impact of varying the operating conditions and the design details on the overall plant’s performance.
