Obeidat: Artificial intelligence is an opportunity for developing countries to catch up with developed countries

University of Jordan News Zakaria Al-Ghoul - The President of the University of Jordan, Dr. Nathir Obeidat, raised a question about the future security and stability of developing or poor countries as a result of the growth of artificial intelligence technology in the developed countries of the world.

He said, during the closing conference of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Curriculum Development Project, that artificial intelligence applications are a double-edged sword, and that developing countries must make optimal use of artificial intelligence tools, to catch up with developed countries, make up for what they missed, and bridge the gap between them.

This came during the activities of the final edition of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Curricula Development Project, organized by the School of Engineering at the University of Jordan in cooperation with the Erasmus Plus National Office and funded by the Education Program of the European Union Commission in Jordan, in the presence of the President of Tafila Technical University, Dr. Bassam Mahasneh, and representatives of the Jordan University of Science and Technology and the University of Jordan. Tafila Technical University, the Lebanese University, Beirut Arab University, the Italian Universities of Pisa and Genoa, the Spanish University of Granada, the German University of Stuttgart, and the Greek Foundation for the Development of Creative Thinking.

Obeidat called for an in-depth look at developing academic curricula, to reflect development and pave the way for further progress, and to be in constant contact with transformations. It is the duty of universities to embrace innovation and prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow in light of the continuous innovation in education.

Obeidat explained that artificial intelligence technology has the ability to provide new opportunities to improve education, and provide great opportunities for researchers that help them collect and analyze data faster and more accurately, leading to deeper and more detailed discoveries.

Obeidat added, "Today we are in an ideal position to be pioneers in this field, and with cooperation between universities and the world of industry and expertise, we may constitute a starting point for an unparalleled innovative research movement. I hope that we will make good use of the opportunity, and not be satisfied with the role of observer of the educational scene as it develops around us." ".

In turn, Director of the Education Program of the European Union Commission, Ines Alves, presented the bilateral relations between Jordan and the European Union Commission, stressing the great interest that the Commission attaches to building bridges of cooperation at the economic, cultural, academic and political levels in a way that meets the ambitions and needs of both sides.

She said that the project to develop artificial intelligence and robotics curricula is one of the results of cooperation with the University of Jordan, which she described as the university most keen on preparing its students and graduates in a modern way that matches the requirements of the labor market.

The Director of the National Erasmus Plus Office, Dr. Ahmed Abu Al-Haija, gave a briefing in which he discussed the impact of the Erasmus Plus program projects at the national level at the level of participating institutions from the communications and information technology sector, in addition to its impact at the individual level. The program helped institutions and universities conclude international agreements and update study plans to keep pace with their counterparts in European countries, in addition to its contribution to modernizing the infrastructure of participating universities and the internationalization of universities and institutions.

Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Menwer Attarakih, said that we must not accept the inadequacy of human intelligence in the face of machine learning and intelligence, but rather let our minds lead them with discipline to their useful and safe path.

Attarakih added that the college has begun introducing the principles of artificial intelligence and its applications into the programs of the School of Engineering, through basic and advanced courses or other programs related to artificial intelligence, whether in integration with its counterparts in the College of Engineering or other colleges.

The project coordinator for developing artificial intelligence and robotics curricula, Dr. Gheith Abandah, said that the project began to explore the role of artificial intelligence and robotics in our contemporary world and in response to their importance, with generous support from the European Union within the Erasmus PPS program, to qualify experts in artificial intelligence and robotics technologies who are able to apply these technologies for the benefit of their communities. And the economy of their countries, by creating new higher education programs and improving existing programs in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics.

Abandah added that the most prominent results of the project were the establishment of a master's program in artificial intelligence and robotics at the University of Jordan, and a bachelor's program in intelligent systems engineering at Tafila Technical University, in addition to developing the curricula of thirteen existing programs in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics.

The project to develop curricula for artificial intelligence and robotics, in addition to the University of Jordan coordinating the project, includes the Jordan University of Science and Technology, Tafila Technical University, the Lebanese University, Beirut Arab University, the Italian Universities of Pisa and Genoa, the Spanish University of Granada, the German University of Stuttgart, and the Greek Foundation for the Development of Creative Thinking.
